Memories fill your mind,
As your pour out the pills.
Take one for the anxiety,
Another for the pain.
A third to ease your memories,
And a fourth to sleep.
Guards screaming in your ears,
Bodies pilled up high.
An explosion rips through your shaggy, dirty hair.
Your best friend screams.
His arm lands on you,
Frightened you turn away.
Your stomach turns,
Empty as it is you purge.
You run your bloodied arm over your face,
Smearing the dirt into the sweat.
Cold water splashes onto your face,
Drowning out the memories.
So much lost in that war,
So much left unsaid.
The mirror is taken up by your old, wrinkled face.
Tears line the drying skin,
Cracked and spotted.
Your stub of a hand knocks the pills onto the floor.
You crouch down to get them,
Stunned by a memory.
Bombs, and landmines exploding,
Your right arm filled with pain.
Blood drips down, and carries dirt with it.
Soldiers from both sides fighting, and ducking.
You hide behind a dirt mound,
As the sky turns black.
Screams of pain and the smells of sweat and blood surround you.
Tears form in your eyes,
You pick up the gun in your left hand.
It is heavy and cold.
Run into open fire,
Screaming increases.
Then down onto the ground you go.
Bleeding from your stomach.
Blood curdling screams come from you,
Medics rush to help.
Opening your eyes you see the bathroom ceiling.
You stand weakly and walk to your room.
The purple hearts gleam in the light,
As you shut them off.
And prepare for the dreams,
For the memories.
